I took some pictures yesterday but didn't have time to upload and post them until today. The night before, a windstorm blew down the contorta willow sapling that used to stand between the house yard and the south lot, near the big maple tree.

Birdfeeding

Today is mostly cloudy.  It rained again at some point last night.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a large flock of sparrows and a mourning dove.

I heard the owl hooting all night too.  :D

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/10/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 1/10/26 -- I put out a fresh suet cake and refilled the hopper feeder.  Sparrows have been mobbing.  There is now a starling in addition to the mourning dove, but he isn't trying to squeeze in there either -- he knows he is outnumbered.

EDIT 1/10/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

It is 5 PM.  The sun has recently set but the sky is still fairly light.

I am done for the night.

Fossils

Why Earth’s earliest animals left little trace behind

Spicules, tiny mineral needles that stiffen sponge tissue, drop into seafloor mud and can persist for ages. When early sponges lacked these needles, the fossil record would mainly show empty space and a few ambiguous chemical traces. Many of the rocks that capture early animal life formed during the quiet stretch just before the Cambrian explosion. Geologists call this interval the Ediacaran, the last Precambrian period with large, soft animals, and they mark it on official time charts. In those layers, sponge bodies are hard to spot, so the debate has leaned heavily on genetics and chemistry.

Human brains emit light and glow in the dark, revealing our mental state

All living tissues give off photons as excited molecules shed excess energy. The phenomenon is so subtle – roughly a million times dimmer than the threshold of human vision – that researchers call it ultra-weak photon emission (UPE).

Oh look, scientists have "discovered" the aura of life energy. Now go figure out how people detect it without tools, because humans have been drawing and writing about that for ages.

Hi and welcome to our weekly Free for All day. :D There are no themes to follow for prompts or fills. If, perhaps, you missed a prompt theme that you liked, or you've had any ideas that didn't really work with Tuesday's or Thursday's posts, then today's your chance to prompt 'em. Be free, and have fun! ✎

Just a few rules:
1. No more than five prompts in a row.
2. No more than three prompts in the same fandom.
3. Use the character's full name and the fandom's full name for ease in adding to the Lonely Prompts spreadsheet.
4. No spoilers in prompts for a month after airing, or use the spoiler cut option found here. Unfortunately, DW doesn’t have a cut tag, so use your best judgment when it comes to spoilers.
5. If your fill contains spoilers, warn and leave plenty of space, or use the spoiler cut.
6. If your story has possible triggers, please warn for them in the subject line!

Prompts should be formatted as follows: [Use the character's full names and fandom's full name]
Fandom, Character +/ Character, Prompt

Are today's prompts not catching your eye? No worries, because we have plenty of older prompts that just might do the trick! You can browse through the comm's calendar archive (here on LJ or here on DW) for themed and Free For All posts, or perhaps check out Sunday posts for Lonely Prompt requests. (Or, you can be like me, and try to save interesting prompts as you see 'em... and then end up with multiple text doc files full of [themes + links + prompts] that you can easily look through and search for keywords.) Multiple fills for one prompt are welcome, by the way! Oh, and you are very likely to find some awesome fills to read as well, and wouldn't it be nice to leave a comment on those lovely little writing distractions? ~_^

We are on AO3! If you fill a prompt and post it to AO3, please add it to the Bite Sized Bits of Fic from 2026 collection.

If you are viewing this post on our Dreamwidth site: please know that fills posted here will not show up as comments on our LiveJournal site, but you are still more than welcome to participate. =)

If you have a Dreamwidth account and would feel more comfortable participating there, please feel free to do so… and spread the word! [community profile] comment_fic

A friendly reminder about our posting schedule: Themed posts for new prompts go up on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Saturdays are a Free for All day for new prompts of any flavor. Sundays are for showing Lonely Prompts some love, whether by requesting for someone to adopt them or by sharing any fills that you've recently completed.

Adult Artists Webring

1) I'm really happy for adult artists (NSFW) to find a place they won't get kicked out of.

2) I'm also delighted to see webrings in general coming back.  Search engines are so bad nowadays, we really need alternatives ways to find things.

People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

Is it more or less difficult to be successful in the modern world than it was in the past (10, 50, 100, or 1,000 years ago)?

Challenge Day #5: In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

My wish list:

1. Recs for music with female vocallist, or music by female composers. I like a variety of music: metal, rock, Celtic, pop, bardcore, country, etc. Music in non-English languages are welcomed! A sampling of my favourite singers/bands: Loreena Mckennit, Dar Williams, Vienna Teng, Within Temptation, XG, etc.

2. Recs for interesting blogs to follow. Books, nature, history, cute animals, trivia, tabletop RPG, world building, art and craft, or anything you find interesting

3. Stolen from [personal profile] kingstoken : Go to arab.org and "click to help", it's free. All raised money goes to UN agencies.

Snowflake Challenge: A warmly light quaint street of shops at night with heavy snow falling.

We made it through the first week of January. This is enough to get an early glimpse of progress with New Year's resolutions. It's also malleable enough to make changes. Watch for the parallel check in post over on [community profile] goals_on_dw. Its busy season is December-January, with weekly check-in posts for January, then monthly after that.

Birdfeeding

Today is cloudy and cool.  Last night it rained with high winds.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows.

I put out water for the birds.

What I thought was a branch blown down in the house yard is actually the contorta willow sapling that died.  I may see if I can make something from it.

EDIT 1/9/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 1/9/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 1/9/26 -- I took a few pictures around the yard.

I raked another quadrant around the firepit.

EDIT 1/9/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Snowflake Challenge 5: Wishlist

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your wishlist if you feel comfortable doing so.

If you have wishes for transformative works of your own works or another's work, remember to include links to those sources in order to make it easier for people to create.

Be sure to check out other people's wishlists. Maybe someone will grant your wish! Maybe you will be inspired to grant a wish! If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

This is one of my favorite challenges. It can be difficult for a lot of people to ask for things, so remember not to put too much pressure on yourself for coming up with the perfect wishlist! Your wishes could be something you're recently interested in or something you've wanted for a long time but were afraid to ask for or anything in between. There are no limits!

Dogs Build Their Vocabularies Like Toddlers

Basket the Border collie seems to have a way with words. The 7-year-old dog, who resides on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, knows the names of at least 150 toys — “froggy,” “crayon box” and “Pop-Tart,” among them — and can retrieve them on command.

The number is average. Most dogs can learn 100-200 words, typically 150-160. However, a majority of those are verbs like "sit" and "fetch." Nouns are less common, but most dogs learn a bunch of things like "food" and "leash." Having a vocabulary that is mostly nouns is uncommon.

Why a collie? Because people used to teach them the names of the sheep. "All in" is useful, but "Cut Molly" (out of the herd) is even more so.
